Association News….

The reunion dates for the 2020 JWT Association has been set. Mark your calendars beginning on September 30 through October 4, 2020 in Providence/Warwick, Rhode Island. We have more information in the newsletter on the plans for our reunion. In early May, Howard Barrett set up a planning trip to Warwick/Providence/Newport area to determine if this place would be our destination for the 2020 reunion. Oscar and Howard met there in late May, 2019 . We had accomodations at the Crown Plaza Warwick hotel set up by Daniel Beisel, Sales Manager, with the Go Providence Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. For two days, Daniel showed us the area and met with hotels to discuss accomodations. On our first morning, we met the Senior Sales Manager for the Crowne Plaza in Warwich which is located adjacent to Interstate Hwy 95 to discuss the benefits of staying with them for our reunion. Unbeknown to us, this hotel hosts about 30 military reunions every year. Because of their experience of accomodating military reunions, we were pleasently surprised by the hotel’s initial offer to hosts our reunion. Both of us have conducted reunions in the past and usually when negociating with hotels to host a reunion, you usually have to bargin on items that they were to give in to get your business. However, the initial proposal by the Crowne Plaza had everything we would like for this reunion. When we got back to our room to discuss the initial offer, we both laughed and said we found our hotel. There are only two hotels that could hosts our reunion in this area. The other hotel will be going under renovations during the time of our reunion so we are left with only one choice. Fortuneately, it is a great choice. On the following day, we received our contract and signed it. If anyone needs a JWT shirt, hat, or patch; they should contact Jim Kulp at 717-917-2184 or e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Reunion Tours….

At this time, we have two tours we are preparing for the reunion. Currently we are in negociations with various sites and transportation companies. But here are a recap of what we are planning:

Tour 1 – Breakers and Shopping in Newport

This tour will begin with a 2-hour tour of the Breakers Mansion in Newport , RI. This mansion was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895. It has 125,339 sq ft with 70 rooms. After the tour, the bus will take our guest to the Newport waterfront where there are numerous shops, restaurants, and breweries. After several hours of walking the streets shopping and stopping for lunch or refreshments, the buses will return to the hotel in late afternoon. This tour is scheduled for Friday, October 2nd.

Tour 2 – Falls River, Massachusett

On Saturday morning, the buses will load for the 45 minutes trip to Falls River, MA. Here is a naval museum of actual ships who served in World War II. Included is the battleship, USS Massachusetts, the Gearing Class destroyer, USS Joseph P Kennedy, Jr. (850), the submarine USS Lionfish, several PT Boats and a Maritime Museum. It is our intention to have our memorial services aboard the Kennedy shortly after our arrival. Afterwards, the Kennedy as well as the other ships will be available for touring. The below decks of the Kennedy will be open for shipmates and their guests. We intend on providing lunch on this tour and departing in early afternoon. We ask all shipmates and guest attend this tour as it is part of our memorial services. As customary, we will wear our blue JWT shirts and hats for our fallen shipmates. We are looking at including a stop for lunch on this tour.

We will finalize all of the tours in our next newsletter in January 2020.

Memory of Fallen Shipmates….

We lost another shipmate due to a tragic accident. Tim Hibbard of Camarillo, CA died in a motorcycle accident with his nephew riding with him. Jim Kulp, Al, and Karen Telck attended a memorial service for Tim. Most of you will remember Tim from many of our reunions. He was always there making his rounds to each table in the hospitality room. If you know of any other shipmate who has passed, we ask that you notify us so we may pass along to others.
